CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is one of the world’s largest and most respected centers for scientific research. Its business is fundamental physics, finding out what the Universe is made of and how it works.
ATLAS is a particle physics experiment at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. The ATLAS detector is searching for new discoveries in the head-on collisions of protons of extraordinarily high energy.
The experiment is designed to take advantage of the unprecedented energy available at the LHC and observe phenomena that involve highly massive particles which were not observable using earlier lower-energy accelerators. ATLAS will learn about the basic forces that have shaped our Universe since the beginning of time and that will determine its fate. Among the possible unknowns are the origin of mass, extra dimensions of space, unification of fundamental forces, and evidence for dark matter candidates in the Universe. It might shed light on new theories of particle physics beyond the Standard Model.
ATLAS was one of the two LHC experiments involved in the discovery of a subatomic particle consistent with the Higgs boson in July 2012. The experiment is a collaboration involving roughly 3,000 physicists at 175 institutions in 38 countries. It is 45 meters long, 25 meters in diameter, and weighs about 7,000 tons. It is about half as big as the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris and weighs the same as the Eiffel Tower or a hundred 747 jets (empty).
EB Industries has been part of the project since 2001, first through Lawrence Berkeley National
Laboratory in Berkley, California, and currently through CERN. We are responsible for welding the aluminum tubes for the cooling system in the ATLAS Pixel Detector. There are 88 cooling circuits which has a total of 1,112 laser welds, 1,000 of which have been welded by EBI and 112 electron beam welds, all of which have been welded by EBI.
